When is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Tooth removal is a common dental procedure that involves removing a tooth from its socket. Extraction may be necessary in the following cases:

Tooth extraction procedures can either be simple or surgical. For a simple extraction, the dentist will use a special tool to loosen the tooth’s roots and gently pull it out. This type of extraction usually takes less than 30 minutes.

Surgical extractions require more time and are more invasive. It involves cutting the gum tissue around the tooth and carefully pulling it out using forceps. Anesthesia is used during a surgical extraction.

The Tooth Extraction Process

First, the dentist will provide local anesthesia to numb the affected tooth and surrounding gum tissue. Then they will use a special dental instrument to gently loosen your tooth and carefully lift it from its socket.

Sometimes, they may need to make incisions in the gums to access your tooth — especially if the tooth is badly decayed, has broken off at the gum line, or if a wisdom tooth is impacted.

Once the tooth is removed, they will clean and disinfect the socket. Finally, they will place stitches or use PRF therapy to help promote healing.

Dos and Don'ts After A Tooth Extraction

Following a tooth extraction, it is essential to take some precautions to ensure that you do not develop complications. Here are some things to keep in mind after having a tooth pulled:

  • Do not smoke or chew tobacco products
  • Avoid alcohol consumption
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Don’t use a straw, as this can cause dry socket
  • Restrict caffeine intake
  • Take prescribed medications as directed
  • Use a cold compress if swelling or soreness occurs

Commonly Asked Questions

You may experience mild discomfort and swelling at the site of the extraction. You may also feel numbness in the area of the tooth removed. It is normal to feel this way and should go away within 24 hours.

While your extraction site heals, you should stick to soft foods. Stock up on your favorite ice cream, or try some yougurt, soup, or oatmeal. Avoid spicy foods that could irritate the healing site.
