Why Might You Need Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is performed by dentists to correct or repair problems with the mouth. It is often necessary when teeth have been damaged due to injury, infection, or other causes.

The most common reasons why oral surgery is performed include:

Our Oral Surgical Procedures

At Shoreline Dental Care, our oral surgeons perform many different types of oral surgery with expertise ranging from wisdom tooth removal to bone grafting.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth develop above the back molars (the third molar) and usually appear between ages 17 and 25. They are not always painful, but they can cause pain and swelling if they become impacted.

If you have wisdom teeth that are causing discomfort, our dentist will extract them via oral surgery. The procedure can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the number of wisdom teeth you need removed. You’ll be able to go home afterwards, and recovery time is quick.

Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction involves removing a tooth from its socket. When a tooth becomes severely decayed of if it has been broken or damaged beyond repair, it needs to be removed so that a suitable replacement can be implanted.

To perform a tooth extraction, our dentist will numb the area around the tooth using topical or injected anesthesia. Once the tooth is extracted, they will clean up the wound and apply a bandage.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a surgical technique that involves replacing bone that is lost or deteriorated, most often due to poor oral health or missing teeth. It’s a common procedure that is performed in order to prepare for dental implants.

The dentist will harvest bone from another part of your body or use donor bone material, and place it into the affected area. Once the bone graft heals, they can proceed with additional procedures like placing implants.

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift is a surgical technique to increase the height of the floor of the maxillary sinuses. This increases the amount of bone available for dental implant surgery. During a sinus lift, our dentist will create a small window into the sinus cavity through which they will place graft material. Afterward, they will close the opening with sutures.

PRF

Platelet Rich Fibrin is a natural blood product used as a scaffold for new tissue growth. It contains platelets and fibrinogen, two proteins found naturally in human blood. We can use PRF to help promote healing after oral surgery by combining these two components.

The process begins when our dentist removes a small piece of gum tissue from your mouth. Next, they will separate the cells from the rest of the tissue by spinning them at high speeds in a centrifuge. This separates the red blood cells from the white blood cells and platelets. Then, the platelets are mixed with thrombin, a protein that helps activate the platelets. Finally, the mixture is applied directly onto the site where the gum was removed.

How Do I Prepare For Oral Surgery?

Before undergoing any oral surgery, you must first schedule a consultation so our dentist can conduct a thorough examination. This will determine if you are a good candidate for surgery and help us develop a treatment plan.

We may also ask for information about your current medications, allergies, past surgeries, and any other pertinent health details.

Once everything is complete, our dentist will schedule an appointment for you to have your surgery!
